Your Starting XI Midfielders

May 19th, 2006 | By: WC Bob | 4 Comments »

We’ve talked about the keepers and defenders, now it is time to select the midfielders who should start for the Palancas in the World Cup. Even though I am not entirely convinced that coach Goncalves will play a 4-4-2, let’s assume that he does. Which players would you choose for the midfield? The choices are:

André (Kuwait SC), Edson (Pacos Ferreira), Figueiredo, Mendonca (Varzim), Miloy (InterClube), Zé Kalanga (Petro Atletico) and will throw in Mateus (Gil Vicente) even though he is listed as a forward.

I vote for: Figueiredo, Ze Kalanga, Mateus and Miloy. Who do you want to start?

Good choice Pasha. I would only swap Miloy for Andre. I expect at least one of these guys will score in the WC.

I think Edson will start in the place of Ze Kalanga (I would have prefered Edson as a sub but Goncalves seems to like his style).

Figueiredo
Andre (cant leave him out… we have the same first name)
Ze Kalanga
Miloy

Andre and Miloy will play as defensive midfielders while Figueiredo and Kalanga will play offensive.

Ze Kalanga
Mateus
Figueiredo
Andre

Hopefully, this midfield will cause problems to our opponents. Mendonca was terrible in the African Nations and doesnt deserve a start. Edson would be a good choice against Iran but when we play Portugal and Mexico we need strong midfielders that are not going to spend half of the game on the floor.

I’d pick Mateus, Ze Kalanga, Figueiredo and Edson. I’m not so sure about Andre… and Edson may be too lightweight if we’re playing a physical game; he does have the skills and the experience to play against the tuguinhas, though.
