Angola World Cup Squad

In announcing his World Cup squad on Sunday coach Goncalves said this: “These are the best players we have available in terms of quality and we are going to prepare the best we can with them,” said Goncalves. “We are going to try to create a cohesive, determined team that will fight to the end.”

Here is the list of the men who will represent Angola in Germany. It is worth noting that Maurito was not chosen because of fitness questions. Otherwise, this is a team that was largely expected although in the end Goncalves went with five forwards instead of four. More thoughts to come.

Goalkeepers: João Ricardo (unattached), Lama (Petro Atletico), Mário (InterClube)

Defenders: Delgado (Petro Atletico), Jamba (AS Aviacao), Kali (FC Barreirense), Lebo Lebo (Petro Atletico), Loco (Primeiro Agosto), Marco Abreu (Portimonense), Marco Airosa (FC Barreirense), Rui Marques (Hull)

Midfielders: André (Kuwait SC), Edson (Pacos Ferreira), Figueiredo, Mendonca (Varzim), Miloy (InterClube), Zé Kalanga (Petro Atletico)

Strikers: Akwá (unattached), Andre Titi Buengo (Clermont Foot), Flávio (Al Ahli), Love (AS Aviacao), Mantorras (Benfica), Mateus (Gil Vicente).

[...] It was a busy Sunday of roster naming as the World Cup coaches continue to release their squads ahead of Monday’s deadline. World Cup debutant Angola’s list of 23 includes few surprises other than uncapped keeper Mario being named to the team and injured Maurito left at home. The Palancas Negras are the team I am unabashedly supporting this year and I am excited to see the names of the guys who are going to kick serious butt in Germany. Jump on the bandwagon now before it gets too full. [...]

The selection of the squad was good, apart from the fact that Titi Buengo was selected ahead of another midfielder.

I count 6 forwards. And the midfield looks a bit thin.

Six fowards seems like a lot… Yet if one of them can play the AM position it may be just right.

[...] Now that we know the players that will represent Angola in Germany, it is time to think about the starting lineup that should be used. We’ll go through this position-by-position and try to come up with a lineup based on your comments. Today’s position is goalkeeper. The three choices are: João Ricardo, Lama, and Mário. [...]
