Angola from the Portugal Persepective

March 30th, 2006 | By: WC Bob | 5 Comments »

My colleague Luis Paulo over on the Portugal blog gives his thoughts on Angola. I respect his thoughts a lot and it is clear that he has spent some time looking at Angola. The one area I would disagree is that he thinks offense is the most promising aspect of the Palancas Negras. As we saw in qualifying and as we saw in the Cup of Nations, goals are hard to come by for Angola. I don’t think that we are going to win at the World Cup by being an offensive team. I think it is our defense that will be the key. If Pedro Emanuel and Rui Marques can step in and play to their ability I think our backline will be the strength of the team.

The area that most concerns me at the moment is the midfield. I see no replacement for Gilberto’s class. In a group that features some of the World Cup’s best midfielders, Angola clearly lags behind.

Sometime soon I will borrow Luis Paulo’s idea and provide a breakdown of Portugal, Iran and Mexico. Nice job Luis Paulo!

I don’t know if it would be correct to say that the attack is promising aspect of the Palancas. However is there were we can find the most knowed and experience players. If Pedro Emanuel and Rui Marques really join the team this scenery could change, but I wasn’t counting on that when I wrote my article(at least not 100% sure). Although, by no circunstances Angola could play offensive. This just works if you have the best players. When you lack individual talents the best you can do is to set a defensive team, where even the attack contributes with the defense and play with a fast counter-attack, hoping that thoses strikers would score when they get the chance. Another way to go is to specialize in one type of play(like high balls or long shots) and try to keep the game like that. It’s seems easy whem we talk about it but it’s not.

I’m sorry if I made any mistake. I have to say that I didn’t know Angola’s team very well until now.

Hey, what about Johnson? He plays here in Brazil.

Oh no, please don’t take my post as saying you were wrong. In fact I hope you are right and the offense shines this summer. I just don’t think we are going to see too many goals, but you never know.

Johnson Macaba is a bit of a mystery. He came off the bench in the Cup of Nations and didn’t show too much. For some reason he doesn’t figure too highly into Goncalves plans. Maybe it is because he plays so far away in Brazil. Good question though!

Don’t worry. I didn’t.

I don’t see Angola scoring many goals specially against good defenses like Mexico or Portugal. But maybe, against Iran, who knows.

Its impossible to predict how many goals Angola will score or how well their defense will do, as they are very unpredictable. It all depends on which players are selected to show up on the field. I think they would be able to score against Portugal or Mexico if the right combination of attack is selected.

Hi, I am one of the blogers in the Mexico Area.

I don’t know a lot, or mearly anithing of the Palancas negras, and I have some questions to Pasha.

Ok. this is what I know. You have a few players in Europe, probably more than Mexico (3), all of them play in Portugal. Pedro Emanuel (Porto) would be the best defender on the team, if he chooses to play with Angola. And Mantorras (Benfica)is your best striker.

Luis de Oliveira, has coached the palancas negras, since most of them where only a promise in Angolan football, wich is real good. Lama, Mendoca, Mantorras and Gilberto(injured) have been with Oliveira since Angola got to the record books in 2001. After a very good qualification round and a mediocre African Cup, you’re in your first World Cup.

Ok, that’s what I got. Now these are my questions to Pasha so I can understand more are rivals and friends.

1. ¿Who will be the players who will score the goals of Angola?¿How many would you expect to be a good number, and a bad one?

2. You talked about a group (D) of talented midfielders, I am with you with: Christiano, Deco and Figo, but do you consider Mexico or Iran to have real good midfielders?

3. After this world cup, would you expect any players to stay in Europe? ¿Who?

4. What are your predictions on Angola in the World cup?

Thank you very much, have a nice day.
