Akwa Needs Help at Forward

June 13th, 2006 | By: WC Bob | 7 Comments »

Angola’s captain has come out and said that he would like some support up front in the team’s next game against Mexico. In the World Cup opener, Akwa was pretty much on an island at forward and was closely marked by Portugal’s defense. He would like to see coach Goncalves shake up the strategy.

“I think the coach will use the same tactic but for me it is better with two strikers because I feel I have more support,” Akwa said.

I happen to agree with Akwa on this one. I know our midfield is a liability and the backline could use an extra player dropping back to defend, but without an effective attack against Mexico we might be in for a long night.

I thought Mantorras brought some pace into the game when he was substituted in the second half. I’d like to see Akwa and Mantorras given the chance to play together. Both are talented forwards who I think could give the Mexico defense some difficulty with their speed.

I know in the World Cup coaches like to emphasize defense first, but Angola needs to get more out of its attack and one way to do that would be to play with two attackers.

I couldnt agree more Pasha. We might as well not play if we dont attack properly. We should aim to beat Mexico- they are not all that! My only fear is the opening minutes of the game. Mexico will follow Portugal in trying to score in the opening minutes.

I think that Angola made a good choice protecting the defense and playing with only one forward against Portugal who is the strongest team in the group. Now they have set the bar for Mexico and Iran to not loose to Portugal by more than one goal. They can open up a bit more against Mexico and hopefully get at least a tie. This could very easily become a 3-team afair for 2nd place, assuming Portugal will win all of their games. Angola is still in it then, and I can’t wait until Friday!

couldn’t agree with you more in theory paulo. i’m sure most people would have imagined portugal to be the top team in this group prior to the competition. however i’m not so sure that position doesn’t belong in fact to mexico. they have been very impressive, not just in beating iran, but for several years now. IMHO they were probably only less impressive than the czech republic and argentina in the first round of group matches. this one may be even tougher to win than the one against portugal, but i agree goncalves must take risks and play 2 strikers. mantorras looked very bright when he belatedly came on against portugal, give him a go from the start prof please.

Mexico should not be taken lightly… they pass the ball good and they will not stop till game over… if Angola wants to make life hard for Mexico they must play harder then they did with Portugal…

One Angola
