Squad Announced for Cosafa Castle Cup

April 8th, 2006 | By: WC Bob | 6 Comments »

Angola coach Luis Oliveira Goncalves has announced the players that will represent the Palancas Negras at the Cosafa Castle Cup in Lesotho later this month. As you can see from the list below, the team is primarily made up of domestic based players and features a lot of players who would be considered on the fringe for making the World Cup team. Only nine of the 27 played in the African Cup of Nations earlier this year.

It is very, very interesting to see that Jose Quitongo was named to the team. He plays for third division Partick Thistle in Scotland. He is one of nine uncapped players picked for the two-day tournament. Belgium-based midfielder Mateus Matinungina is also a player to keep an eye on. I’ve heard good things about him but haven’t seen him play.

Squad:

Goalkeepers: Lama (Petro Atletico), Mario (InterClube)

Defenders: Delgado (Petro Atletico), Elisio (Primeiro Agosto), Hugo, Jamba (both AS Aviacao), Joazinho (Primeiro Agosto), Joel (InterClube), Kali (FC Barreirense, Portugal), Lebo-Lebo (Petro Atletico), Loco (Primeiro Agosto), Marco Airosa (FC Barreirense, Portugal), Xara (Petro Atletico)

Midfielders: Fofana (AS Aviacao), Gazeta (Primeiro Agosto), Jojo (Sagrada Esperanca), Jose Quitongo (Partick Thistle, Scotland), Mateus Matinungina (Sprimont Comblain Sport, Belgium), Miloy (InterClube), Sergio (AS Aviacao), Ze Augusto (Primeiro Agosto), Ze Kalanga (Petro Atletico)

Strikers: Andre Mateus (InterClube), Andre Titi Buengo (Clermont Foot, France), Love (AS Aviacao), Manucho, Santana (both Petro Atletico).

It will be interesting if they play Love and Santana as forwards. I reckon they could do well.

I would be very excited to see Love get a chance, especially if he is paired with Santana. They play back-to-back games so hopefully we’ll get a chance to see a lot of the players see action.

Should be a good match for the coach to see who is good enough for the WC. I believe however, that Rui Marques should have been in that list too as he doesnt play enough for Leeds.

I’m guessing that Rui Marques wasn’t released by Leeds since this isn’t a FIFA international date. Just my guess.
