Angola

Portugal 1 Angola 0

I’m still shaking after this game. Angola started absolutely horribly with Portugal almost scoring in the first ten seconds. Portugal got a goal from Pauleta in the 4th minute and I started to think we were going to get crushed. But the players continued to fight on and they made a game of it.

Portugal played like the superior team tonight. Our midfield gave them way too much room to operate and our backline didn’t mark well. It never looked like our forwards had much support.

Ricardo played a great game in goal and I thought Matteus really showed some promise. I wasn’t very pleased with the play of Figueredo. He needs to do a better job of distributing the ball.

Overall, it could have been worse but I know our team is capable of playing better. We can hold our heads high and only hope that better days are ahead.

I enjoyed the match and the Angolans game to live in the closer stages of the match. But again like Cote d’Ivoire yesterday they just couldn’t finish. You would have thought the strikers were playing Rugby not soccer. Good effort

Pasha – Angola certainly acquitted themselves today. Portugal controlled most of the match, but there’s no shame in a 1-0 scorline.

The type of effort and heart we’ve already seen from Angola, T&T, etc. is inspiring for all teams, especially the underdogs (like Ecuador!).

Congrats!

even though im from ireland i think portugal are a really good side.they started well with a great goal from pauleta but they looked sloppy at parts of the game.i think the decision to take ronaldo off was stupid he was playing well and had loads of chances.

First of all i just have to say well done angola, they were up against a top-class side and to get a respectable score like that after conceding so early is a tremendous result.

I’m sure im not the only person who thought that Portugal would thrash Angola 2nyt and really make a statement of intent for their world cup run.

Angola didn’t start the game well, and when the first goal went in i thought “here we go this cud be 2 or 3 b4 20mins”…but to my suprise Angola really put up a fight.

It was really warming for the neutral too see Angola play well in that 2nd half, and although they only cut up a few half-chances they can go back 2 their hotel 2nyt with there heads up high knowing that they didn’t let themselves down 2nyt nor there country.

Akwa and Ricardo were the best on Angola’s side today. I would really like to see Akwa playing with Mantorras.

Pasha,

Angola’s game today reminded me of the United States’ versus Italy in 1990. The comparison isn’t perfect, obviously (it was the second game for each team and Italy was the host). Nevertheless, it similar in that it was a case of an inferior and some would say naive team, on the world stage for the first time, totally dominated by a technically superior opponent but fighting valiently to keep the scoreline to 1-0.

I don’t know what the future holds for Angolan soccer but if they fight as hard as they did today, it can only be positive.

We did our homework and played a decent game. We could have done much better though.

Delgado did an excelent job on C.Ronaldo, and Kali was the impeccable. Not to mention our J. Ricardo who saved us from conceding a few more goals.

However, Akwa shouldn’t have come out that early; Coach should try to play him and Mantorras together for a stretch. Figueiredo, in my opinion, he’s the heart of our midfield and so what if today he played a more defensive game..
Coach should have replaced him by a forward like Love or Flavio…

Angola played a big game today, if the defender number 3 was quick he would’ve prevented Figo from crossing the ball. Overall Angola maintained Portugal and kept them at bay, even though Portugal had the superior ball possesion. They need a little support from midfield to the attacking players, but again that could have left them exposed.

Congrats to you guys! I saw the game and was VERY impressed with the way Angola played. our team embarrassed us today against Mexico, specially our coach. I really think your team can do something big against Mexico.

The only people that really counted out angola were the people with no heart. Those who thought and said that Angola would get totally blown out need to understand that pride and hope are very dangerous when mixed together and angola showed both of them tonight against a team with caliber players.

Not to say that we are happy with the end result, but lets just say that as a proud Angola supporter the 1-0 result was not that bad.

And yes can we please put Mantorras and Awka in the same line.

Go Angola Go

Im a little disappointed because I know we could have done better. When Figueiredo was subbed, the coach should have brought on a striker (Love or Flavio) so we could play some attacking football at the end. Never mind, we were OK. There is always our last 2 games.

Guys, you made a good game yesterday and basicly shut up the critics that said Angola were gonna be crushed.

Now, you just have to beat Mexico and Iran! ;-)

Date Played: June 11, 2006 (Group Stage)

Below is a video of the FIFA World Cup 2006 game between Angola vs Portugal where Pauleta scored in the 4th minute of the game. This video shows how Portugal has been dependent on Figo most of the time.
