Player Profile: Marco Abreu
At the ripe old age of 31, defender Marco Abreu is one of the oldest players on Angola’s roster. He is also one of the most physical and as you can see here, he is also one of the most well traveled having played for a number of teams in Portugal.
Marco currently plays his club ball with Portimonense in Portugal. He was called up to the national team for the first time during this year’s African Cup of Nations in Egypt. He won his first cap in a friendly against Morocco just before the Nations Cup but pulled a muscle in his second international, Angola’s 3-1 defeat by the Democratic Republic of Congo in the opening match of the tournament.
Marco is seen as a possible replacement for Yamba Asha, who is not eligible to play in the World Cup due to a doping suspension.
Personally, I think he is a decent player but I am not sure if he is really World Cup caliber. He certainly deserves a shot, but with the addition of Pedro Emanuel and Rui Marquez he might just be a guy to bring off the bench in the event of injury.
