Overcoming the Odds

January 17th, 2006 | By: WC Bob | No Comments »

The mere fact that Angola, a country wracked by decades of conflict, has qualified for the World Cup is a remarkable acheivement. If you haven’t done so already, take a look at Owen Slot’s story in the Times online.

The thing that really stands out to me is the dedication of Angola’s coach Luis Oliveira Gonçalves, who helped to foster the development of many of the Palancas Negras when they were younger and war was raging. He could have fled elsewhere or given up, but he continued on despite the challenges of poverty, war and despair.

Angola’s apprearence in the World Cup is a testament to the courage of its coach and its players.
