Maurito Expected to be Ready for World Cup

May 11th, 2006 | By: WC Bob | 1 Comment »

Striker Maurito’s injured leg is not as bad as first reported and he is expected to return to action on Friday for his club team Al Wahda in a United Arab Emirates. If his leg holds up in that match he is likely to be named to Angola’s World Cup roster on Sunday. This is surprising news since only a few weeks ago it was reported that he was out for up to six months with a broken leg, but the injury was never that bad.

So if Maurito is healthy that means the forwards will be Akwa, Maurito, and Mateus with one more spot available. Will it be Mantorras, Flavio, Love or Titi Bwengo? Of that group you have to pick Mantorras, but only if he and Goncalves see eye to eye. My second choice would be Love followed by Flavio.

In the African Nations, Akwa, Flavio, Mantorras, Love and Maurito were all on the squad. If Maurito’s return means that a key player should be left out of the squad, then I would have prefered to see him miss the trip. Goncalves could play Maurito as an attacking midfielder, meaning that he wont have to drop a forward to make way, I think.
