Mantorras the Hero for Benefica
It has been a long time coming for Angola’s Pedro Mantorras with his club team Benefica but on Sunday the wait was worth it. Mantorras scored the game winner in injury time to lift his club over Rio Ave 1-0. Mantorras has seen limited action at Benefica after sustaining an injury a few years ago and he has been frustrated with his playing time both for the club and for the Palancas Negras. It is great to see that he was given an opportunity to work his magic and that is exactly what he did. Now we can only hope that he works things out with Goncalves and that we see him scoring goals in an Angola uniform this summer in Germany.

I heard that Ronald Koeman considers him the ‘last choice forward’ in the team. For him to improve as a footballer, he has to leave Benfica.

And were do you suggest he moves to, Dido…? Benfica almost didn’t have ANY choice at all up front, in the beggining of the season. Now they have some more wingers and attacking players but I think still the same two strikers. Nuno Gomes and Pedro Mantorras. Actually, the “secret formula” Koeman has found, is to place Nuno Gomes behind the striker (as a fake nr 10, which he does quite well, because even as a striker he usually needs to pick the ball a bit behind) and to place Geovanni (usually a winger, on the right hand side) as striker. It worked pretty well against Man Utd. Mantorras is quite good and very fast, but sometimes a bit clumsy and has struggled with injuries, as far as I know. Which will also prevent him from playing regularly. Considering the progress Benfica has been making in the CL, I’d say Benfica is for the time being, a very good option for Matorras. Just imagine that he gets to play Barcelona and that he scores… Everybody will remember him in the WC, no matter what happens to Benfica… ![]()

Because of his playing style i think mantorras would be perfectly suited to the english premiership, even if he starts at a lower club, with regular games he would soon be picked up by a bigger club im certain of that!
