Mantorras Might Miss World Cup

March 16th, 2006 | By: WC Bob | 2 Comments »

Special thanks to loyal blog reader Andre for tipping me off to this story (in Portuguese) in the Journal of Angola about Pedro Mantorras. The Benefica striker has not been happy with his role on the Palancas Negras. We reported a few weeks back that he was considering quitting international football after the World Cup. Now there is some talk that he will skip out on the World Cup altogether.

This would be a terrible blow for Angola and I can only hope that whatever differences Mantorras has with coach Gonçalves can be worked out before Germany.

One problem Mantorras faces is the limited playing time he gets at Benefica. This has hurt his ability to gain game fitness, something that is important to Gonçalves as well as his ability to achieve his full potential.

As we saw in the African Cup of Nations and in the friendly against Korea earlier this month, the Angolan attack is just not the same when Mantorras is not involved.

Thats a terrible news! I hope Goncalves gains some sense and thinks twice about this ridiculous idea of leaving Mantorras out. He should know Mantorras well by now though. He was the manager when they won the under 21 African cup. I really dont know whats going on between them two.

Thats Angola dead if Mantorras is not on the squad! Akwa will retire soon and you would expect Mantorras to be the main man. I dont see anyone else making a name of himself in an Angolan shirt.
