Mabi de Almeida confirms desire to scout in Europe

January 15th, 2009 | By: kiko | 40 Comments »

In a recent interview, Almeida admitted that the Angolan technical team will start scouting for players in Europe.

The technical team will spend 2 weeks in Europe scouting for players. Almeida claimed that the focus will be on the defence, midfield and the goalkeeping positions.

If Almeida and his team get hold of one decent central defenders and two experienced midfielders, then the team will potentially increase their chances of reaching the semi-finals of the AFCON.

We are also likely to know the conclusion to the Kivuvu “allegiance”.

The team’s situation can only improve after this news!

kiko,

I think L.Pedro could help our cause greatly.
I personally believe there are many of these 18-21 years players e.g. Djalma Campos scattered around Angola and Europe who could take our football forward instead of relying on the deadwood of people like Love etc…

I’vs read most of all the comments posted by you’ll, but I am a bit confused, if we are to search for players in the world we need to do right, the obstacles were thrown at us, however, the most important issues is not to look for players, but to reenforce our football starting from the young players by getting the most competitive young players in the world by teaching them how to play, getting the techniques right from the early age, if we don’t start to introduce this issues we will be in a dip hole hard to climb, forget Angola now lets look for the future.

what if we start having provincial cup, where teams from luanda play against cunene, benguela ”vs”huambo etc……….., I know that you start seeing now the kids coming from a new era where the football is prone to be the best sport under their eyes, now just imagine how competitive this provincial cup would bring, just to let you know every single team would love to beat luanda, lets start to introduce the litle experince that we had to those kids, the future would be bright if we get this age group==6,==10==12==14==16, in five years time we will be ready for the world.

think about it.

Hey lufemba,
I think the issue of soccer development is a thorny problem when it comes to Africa and not just Angola.
I personally think 2 or 3 years ago we were legging behind the rest of the world but I think a concerted effort has been made to correct that.
For instance at the recent zone 6 under-20 games that were held in South Africa, Angola was awarded the silver medal but the most significant thing for me was that Angola actually sent an under-17 side, that I can only atribute to the fact that it was done in lieu of future competitions.

I also think whether is inter or intra-competition I think it impacts very less on the actual development of the player be it with his/her football or personally.
Don’t get me wrong intra competition is good but is not the be all of development. Iam going to give you an example: In 2001 Angola won the African Youth Championship held in Ethiopia, and in the finals we played against Ghana, from that game/championship Ghana has produced Michael Essine, Muntari, Mensah and Pantsil to name but a few, no you ask where are they? The answer is Chelsea, Internazionalle, Lyon and Fulham. From the Angola team we had Mantorras, Lama, Mendonça and Gilberto, where are they now? They are at Benfica, (however he is semi-retired), Petro and Ahly.
We went to the world youth chapmpionship were we players in exhibition were Kaka, Adriano, Maicon, Robben, Huntelaar, Cisse, Mexes and Mendy to name just a few. Now you ask yourself were are these players currently and were are ours?
It tells you that our players lack the exposure that their counterparts had/have, it tells you that we are behind in terms of soccer development compared to other countries, so what do we need to do?
We need our Girabola teams to be serious about development, we need football academies, we need to expose our youth to the structures of the best football teams in the world but more importantly we need to work in the mindset of our players that playing football is a profession and not a hobby and it should be treated as such.

Kiko,
Did you hear that Libolo bought Johnson Macaba to play soccer in the Girabola? Reports are that they are targeting Maurito as well.
Personally I think that Maurito had so much potential, its sad to see his carreer turning up the way it has.

The Maurito situation is sad. Some of the talented Angolan players dont get an opportunity to shine at the highest level.
From what I saw of Maurito in the last 2 AFCONs, I expected that he would be playing in a more competitive league. Unfortunately that is not the case. Then again, the only exposure he gets is in the AFCON really, as scouts tend to ignore the Arab leagues most of the time.
I heard rumours that Maurito is now only a substitute in his team in Qatar (that is never a good sign), although I havent officially confirmed this fact.

On the other hand, Recreativo do Libolo seems to go for players that (used to) represent the national team. Its a very interesting fact.
The “girabola” is a long way from being an ideal league, but I have to recognise that it is improving every year. But until the league has stepped up a notch, it is always good to have some of our players turning out in more competitive and professional leagues.

Kiko,
I personally think that some of the players get the exposure but our players attitude towards professional football just seem to be wrong. In comparison to other african players we are simply weak minded and lazy.
I remember back in 2004 or so during the world cup qualifier Maurito was touted as the next big thing from Africa yet that didnt materialize.
I honestly think is not a question of talent because anyone that has seen Maurito play knows that he has the talent but why is it that he can’t seem to make the step up to the next level? In my opinion he lacks the discipline and mental strength to want to be the best that there is.
However he is not alone, almost without exception Angolan players just dont want to be the best, e.g. Mantorras after the 01 youth championship had an opportunity to choose between Internazionalle and Benfica, guess what did he choose? Benfica, I can tell that if he was a Ghanain/cameroonian/nigerian etc he would have chose Inter.
Mendonça with countless oportunities to prove his worth where is he now? Languishing playing second division soccer in portugal.
Couple years ago Quinzinho, was coached by Bobby Robson, he was tipped for the top but because he lacked discipline that never materialised, same happened to Abel Campos, Vata Matano etc…
Eu penso para nós evoluir temos que mudar o nosso modo de pensar, seja como futebolista ou como um homen angolano.

Pedro, thanks for reminding me of the Youth championships. There really is something wrong with the players mentality.

Mantorras was probably persuaded by the fact that he would be playing in a Portuguese speaking country and therefore would not struggle to adapt. Like you mentioned Pedro, he chose the easier option because of the fear of harder work elsewhere.

Mendonca never really excelled to his potential, I think. Had he made the right choice after the Youth championship in 2001, he would have been a much better player.

The Quinzinho generation, in my eyes, failed to achieve anything significant. Akwa, Quinzinho and Paulao were all regarded as great at the time. But the national team achieved more a few years later with less known (and less hyped) players. Again, like you suggested, perhaps they didnt work hard enough to take their chances at the top.

Apart from Manucho, Angola doesnt have any players who play in top leagues, despite many trying to do so. Maybe they just dont believe in themselves enough. They need to believe in order to achieve, and always aim for the top.

Espero que o Santana aproveite a sua chance (e tomara que nao acabe na segunda divisao Portuguesa).

I personally like Manucho not because he is incredibly talented, but because he seems to be quite disciplined in order to practice his craft(I think Akwá had more talent on his one foot than both Manucho’s feet, lol)
I think my opinion on Maurito discipline is well documented but Quinzinho is by far the most undisciplined Angolan player of all time, lol.
As for Akwá I just think he was abused by the Angolan FA, I remembered when he got transfered to Benfica, he was hardly ever in Portugal, he played under 20, 23 and for the Palancas Negras simultaneously. Perhaps he was caught on the hype of being “menino de ouro”.
I think the mentality is changing for the better but we have a long way to go before we start producing worlwide superstars.

I also wish Santana all the best, however I heard that he has already got injured but he has healed recently.
Off topic: this week Dedé scored for Paços de Ferreira, Rui Marques scored for Leeds and Mendonça scored for Varzim and all of them are rarely on the goals for their respective teams, lol

I hope Santana comes back fully fit and I’m quite interested in seen what type of call up Mr. Mabi is gonna make even thought i don’t think he’ll make any changes from the same old usual suspects that we all know about it…. :( this is the time to try a few new faces before the AFCON starts in a years time

I have so much issues with this call up in so many different levels that I dont even know where to start.
Just to mention one: the call up of jackson Garcia – wow, the man apparently plays for Penafiel, not even a championship team in Portugal but a district team, Come on, surely we can do better than that cant we?
to add salt to injuries, it is been alleged that he is actually clubless…geee!!!!!!!!

Well ameen 2 of your starting players weren’t released by their clubs ( Ze Kalanga, Andre & Amaro ) as for what Pedro said it really makes me sad we are calling up district players from the Portuguese league + vale 1 girabolista than a club less player… OH well but the FAF is at fault not Mabi as they aren’t offering any rewards for who ever plays for Angola in order to incentive’s players to join Palancas Negras….. thats why Kivuvu and rightly so said no to Angola… :( “but we still have a chance for him to change alliance back to Angola” his dad his a proud Angolan but knows that right now we ( Angola ) are not ready to offer compensation if anything goes wrong with is son…..

Edson Pascoal is One of the best midfield players, he can play on the left/Right/Central of midfielder. Plays like Robinho.very very good player who would inmprove the angolan football team.. and he is only 20 years old. he plays for a football team in england conference south for St Albans F.c. Pass the word about so we can get this kid to play for angolan before england or portgual try and call him up………..

Viera Dias,
It was infact established that Jackson Garcia is not even a district team soccer player, he is a clubless former district player who was selected on the basis that “allegedly” saw a video of him playing. However that is a lie because he has been clubless for quite some time.
All I have to say for that is Wow( but in a very sad note)

Also, we all can recognise the Angolan FA incompentence is there for all to see, but I think the issue of playing for a national is more about prestige rather than money.
I know the players are compensated for their troubles, maybe not by European standards but they are compensated nevertheless. E.g. in Africa in terms of infra-structure and organisational approach I can say that South Africa are far ahead than all the countries in Africa, yet in the recent AFCON got paid more their players. Moreover our players get houses etc which I can not said about most African nations.
Kanoute does it for Mali not because he wants the money but because he wants.
Benjani sometimes pays the Zimbabwean trips for all the players out of his own pocket, Weah did it as well, and even M. Kallon also does it.
So is either he wants to play for Angola or he can leave his excuse of money in…Im sure you get my drift.

Moreover his situation is complicated by the fact he has represented the Netherlands at a youth level, so unless he had made an application to change allegiance before he passed the age of 21 (which I doubt it hapened) talking about him its really a futile exercise.
I honestly dont believe he will ever play for the Netherlands senior team, so I feel he made a mistake turning Angola down, subsequently to be exposed to international football.
He somewhat reminds me of Edgar who was begged to play for Angola back in 96/97 whilst playing for Benfica, he turn it down, and 10 years later when his carreer didnt go the way it was supposed to, his change of allegiance was turn down by FIFA, hence missing at an opportunity of playing in a world cup final tournament, its quite sad.

Hey Tony E,
I personally think that if Edson is that good he should at least play league 1 football, because conference football is nothing short than “Girabairro” football.
I hope he makes it big, Lord knows we need all the help we can get, LOL.

As for yesterday’s game, where do I start?
(I am going to reserve my comments for a while), however anybody who holds on to the romantic idea that Mabi De Almeida should be around until next year ’cause he “deserves a chance”, I honestly think he or she should be taken in for psychiatric observation, Lol

Tony,
I took the liberty of checking out St Alb’s website and I didnt see the name Edson listed as a player, neither listed that he played in any of their games preceding their most recent game or at least even during the december 08 period.
BTW, this sounds like a Jackson’s situation all over again, LOL

Pedro,

Considering the fact that Almeida didnt even deserve to be given the post of National manager in the first place, then I wouldnt be surprised if they found a way to stick to him.
What might happen however, is that he might resign if future results dont go his way (due to public pressure). So, lets not waste any more time and lets start putting the pressure on the guy’s head lol.
